Who is Ethereal?

Ethereal Hands is a disabled, LGBTQ+ illustrator, character designer, and world-builder based in the UK.

Since a yong age he has created immersive worlds with rich lore, designed diverse characters and told stories ranging from dark and critical to lighthearted and fufilling using multiple medias including traditional pencil and ink, mixed media and their primary outlet; digital art.

Much of Ethereal's work has a focus on showing off the diverse world we live in, showing different cultures, social settings and human bodytypes. He has a desire to explore the wide spectrum of emotions, disability, LGBTQ+ rights, trauma, mental health, social issues and human sexuality.

Inspired by Dungeons and Dragons, high fantasy, books, music, video games, traditional comics and manga Ethereal creates work that aims to include a unique mix of reality and fantasy drawn from his childhood filled with museum visits, galleries, zoos, farms and history.

About the Avatar

‘Ethereal’ the avatar is the representation of Ethereal Hands the artist and takes inspiration from Japanese Mangkaka artists and their avatars. He choses to use this character as his apperance so he can focus on the artwork created and not their apperance. He is a character Ethereal sketched at work and quickly became how he represents himself in all things related to his illustration work.

Made up of a large centre eye wrapped in hands with a tongue on a human body, he represents Ethereal’s struggle with a distorted sense of self caused due to severe dissociation and disconnection from binary-gender representations. He also represents their love for fantasy and mythology, taking inspiration from biblically accurate angels, fallen angels, demons and monsters. He is also inspired by D&D in the form of Mimics and beholders, two monsters made up of eyes and tongues.

Originally coloured in with highlighters he is bright and colourful with his skintone always being an unnatural striking colour. The only permanent colour is his blue eye with an ‘X’ or cross like pupil. He always is in some form of hoodie or oversized shirt with large boots or shoes. Ethereal choses to draw this character with mobility aids he uses, wheelchairs and canes, dependant on how he feels in the moment and how reliant on them he feels making the character a perfect time capsule of the artist in the moment of creation.

Independent artist/Illustrator — Commissions

Ongoing (Began in 2016)

Create and produce original art pieces both digitally, traditionally and in mixed media forms
Communicating with clients over email, website chats/request boxes and social media inboxes
Fulfilling art requests to the clients standards and wishes from initial ideas to final delivery
Managing my time to ensure commissions are completed to deadlines and within timely manors
Managing my own social media and marketing as an independent artist/illustrator
Keeping clients up to date on their commission process, taking feedback and taking action on said feedback

My work has been turned into tattoos, used on flyers/adverts, been used in private commissions and turned into prints for clients.

TransTape Collaberation

(November 2025-January 2026)

Designed and Illustrated a original artwork to be printed on T-Shirts for the company TransTape
Worked in collaberation with this company to promote and gain sales
Went on to create prints and stickers for sale

WWF work Placement

(April 2025-June 2025)

Created 5 illustrations focussed on flora and fauna from 1 location in WWF's key landscapes, 1 illustrated front cover of proposed guide (A5 fpormatting in CMYK) based on key landscape and 3 promotional images for the guide online using mockup of guide.
Had to ensure work was up to WWF standards with scientific accuracy
Worked to ensure no branding standards were upheld
Worked on client feedback to ensure work was completed on time and to full specifications
